Compare fencing quotes before you book a contractor
A leaning run of closeboard, a single smashed panel and a gate that will not latch all need different people with different tools. GetFencingPrices.co.uk lets homeowners anywhere in the UK describe a fencing job once and hear back from up to four independent local fencing contractors, so you can compare the proposed work and the price.
Matching depends on the job, the postcode and who is available. You may get fewer than four replies. There is no enquiry fee and no requirement to hire any business that responds. Fencing businesses are asked for insurance details and references when they join. Before work starts, ask to see their current documents.
How it works
- Describe the job. Say what needs doing, how long the run is, how high it should be and what is there now. Add the postcode.
- Hear from contractors. Businesses covering your area may ask for photos of the boundary, or want to measure up before pricing.
- Compare the quotes line by line. Check the posts, boards or panels, the labour, the waste removal and VAT before you choose.
The fencing work we cover
Closeboard Fencing Installation
Closeboard is built on site, so the quote should name the posts, the rails and the board thickness. Ask for those details in writing so you can compare the construction, as well as the total.
Fence Panel Replacement
A rotten panel can mean the posts behind it are failing too. Tell the contractor if the posts are visibly leaning, and ask whether a gravel board is included.
Concrete Fence Post Installation
A failed post can bring down otherwise usable panels. A concrete post costs more than timber, and the price turns on whether the old footing is dug out as part of the job.
Garden Gate Installation
A gate needs a firm hanging post and hinges suited to its weight. Measure the opening, say which way it should swing and ask what the latch and hinges are.
Storm-Damaged Fence Repairs
After a gale, the first visit is often to make the fence safe. Photograph the damage before anything is moved, and ask whether the quote will suit an insurer.
Composite Fencing Installation
Composite boards, posts and fittings need to suit the same system. Ask what its guarantee covers. Check which brand is being fitted and whether the installer is approved.
What makes fencing quotes hard to compare
Quotes for the same garden can differ by hundreds of pounds because they specify different materials. One contractor prices timber posts and thin boards, another prices concrete posts and thick boards, and both write fence per metre. Get the material details from each contractor before comparing totals.
- Ask for the post material, section and depth in the ground.
- Check whether gravel boards and a capping rail are included.
- Find out whether the old fence is taken down and taken away, and who pays for the tip.
- Ask how the contractor will deal with a slope, a tree root or a wall at the boundary.
- Check VAT is shown and how long the timber and the workmanship are guaranteed.

Boundaries and permissions
Planning rules differ across the UK. Check with the local planning authority before changing a boundary, especially beside a road or at a listed property. The linked Planning Portal guidance is for England; local restrictions and removed permitted development rights can affect what is allowed. See the Planning Portal guidance on fences, gates and garden walls.
Check your deeds before you replace a shared boundary. Who owns the fence, and who pays for it, depends on the title documents and any agreement with your neighbour. The GOV.UK guidance on property boundaries explains what the Land Registry plan can and cannot show.
GetFencingPrices.co.uk introduces your enquiry. The contractors work for independent businesses, not for this website. Your chosen business handles the fence and agrees its contract, charges and payment arrangements directly with you.
Repair or replace?
A few blown-out panels on firm posts may be worth replacing individually. A run where the posts snap at ground level, or where the boards have gone soft, is usually cheaper to replace than to patch again. Ask the contractor to assess the posts and tell you which ones can be reused, then compare a repair quote with a replacement quote. There is no single age at which a fence has to go.
Start with what you can measure
“Twelve metres of side boundary, 1.8 m high, old panels coming out” gives a contractor plenty to work with. When you are ready, fill in the enquiry form with the details and the property’s postcode.
